For a long time now, MCSE certification has been one of the most recognized programming credentials available. Lately, the newer MCSD, or Microsoft Certified Solution Developer, has also become prized by hiring executives everywhere.

MCSD certification represents acute knowledge of Microsoft based computer programming. Microsoft recommends that those who wish to get MCSD certification training have two years of experience, typically programming in Visual Basic or Visual C++. Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft Site Server will come in handy, too.

What Is MCSD Certification?

Broadly put, MCSD certification displays your ability to develop Web-based software and Windows programming applications with a variety of Microsoft computer technologies. It shows not only training in specific tools and programming technologies such as Microsoft Visual C++ or Microsoft Visual Basic, but also ability to develop computer applications, think, strategize, and maintain systems.

The point of the MCSD certification is to show that you are a capable computer network and programming architect. And the pay that comes with MCSD certification and training proves it.

Computer Training That Is Well Worth It

According to Monster.com, those with MCSD certification had the highest salaries among all professionals with Microsoft certifications. A 2001 salary survey found that those with MCSD training were paid an average base salary of $78,600, compared to $67,100 for those with MCSE certification. MCSD with 15 or more years of programming experience were paid an average of $87,700.

MCSD Programming Course Load

MCSD certification requires three core courses and exams and one elective. Among the core training courses, one of them, "Analyzing Requirements and Defining Solution Architectures," is required. For the other two, you can choose among several courses in two broad areas -- one focusing on computer desktop applications and the other on distributed applications in programming.

Aside from coursework, each exam costs $125. MCSD programming exams, if successful on the first try, would cost $500.
